Spencer Phua

Spencer Phua is a managing director and senior credit analyst in the credit trading group within the fixed income department at Piper Sandler. He joined the firm in April 2020. Phua has an expertise in preferred stock, as well as investment grade/high yield corporate securities.

Prior to joining Piper Sandler, Phua worked as a senior desk analyst at Morgan Stanley in wealth management capital markets (fixed income), where he covered banks, autos and aircraft leasing. He started his financial career as a financial institutions group (FIG) investment banker at Merrill Lynch, followed by a stint at Lehman Brothers, where he worked on an institutional investor-ranked, sell-side publishing credit research team. Phua’s investment experience includes working as a senior credit analyst in fixed income at Prudential, now known as PGIM. In addition, he held a senior credit analyst (financials) team leader position with ING Investment Management, where he was part of the best Institutional Investor ranked Investment Grade team in 2014.

Phua also has some leadership and management experience from his prior career in the military. He graduated from both the University of Oxford (Economics) and the University of London (Law) in the UK. In addition, he obtained his MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management in Evanston IL. Phua has been a CFA charter holder since 2005 and is currently FINRA licensed for the Series 7 and 63.
