MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 27, 2016-- Piper Jaffray Companies (NYSE: PJC), a leading investment bank and asset management firm, announced that Sherry M. Smith joined its board of directors, effective today.

Most recently, Smith was the executive vice president and chief financial officer of SUPERVALU, INC. (NYSE: SVU) where she also held the role of vice president, senior vice president of finance and corporate controller from 1998 to 2002 and treasurer from 2002 to 2005. She is currently an independent director at both Deere & Company and Tuesday Morning Corporation along with a committee member at Realogy Holdings Corp.

With Smith’s addition, the nine person board will be comprised of three women with B. Kristine Johnson and Lisa Polsky serving alongside her. This furthers Piper Jaffray’s effort to grow in diversity following a 2012 award from the 2020 Women on Boards organization, and has made the Honor Roll list for four consecutive years from 2011-2014. This award is presented to companies that are committed to board diversity and have at least 20% women serving on their board.

Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. Cloud State University.
